On Friday, August 16, 2024, the Environmental Protection Network (EPN) sent a letter to EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan, expressing concerns over a proposal on how to address flooding in the Yazoo Backwater Area. The plan, drafted by the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), includes large pumps that could harm wetlands and should not be implemented. In addition, the proposed project has the same or greater impacts than the 2008 proposed project and is similarly prohibited by the 2008 Section 404(c) Final Determination for the Yazoo River Backwater Pumps.
