Environmental Protection Network Reacts to Announcement of Trump’s Nominee to Lead EPA

On November 11, 2024, President-elect Trump announced former Representative Lee Zeldin as his nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at the start of his next term.

There is a lot we don’t yet know about Lee Zeldin, but here is what we do know. First, Donald Trump tried to cripple EPA in the past, and we expect him to try again. Second, Zeldin has a long and alarming history of casting votes in Congress intended to weaken EPA. Finally, Trump has tasked Zeldin with rolling back dozens of clean air and water safeguards. If they succeed, those rollbacks would leave millions of people breathing unhealthy air and drinking unsafe water.

“There are regulations that the left wing of this country have been advocating through regulatory power that ends up causing businesses to go in the wrong direction,” Zeldin said.

“EPA needs an administrator who puts public health first, follows the science, and fully supports its dedicated civil servants,” said Environmental Protection Network Executive Director Michelle Roos. “Public health and environmental protections are what the public expects and deserves, and the Environmental Protection Network will be watching closely as Trump and Zeldin reveal their plans for the agency.”

Michelle Roos and a number of other EPA alumni are available to speak to the media regarding the selection of Lee Zeldin to lead EPA and how the Environmental Protection Network intends to move forward during the second Trump administration.
