Buyout Offer Adds A New Layer to Trump’s Political Purge of Public Servants

A chaotic, costly, and vindictive attempt to scare employees into quitting

On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, in a blatant attempt to lure faithful civil servants into quitting, the Trump administration sent an email and memo to over two million government workers threatening unspecified federal job cuts, and offering them a short window to resign. The move comes amid the administration’s actions to strip civil service of protections. In response, Environmental Protection Network Executive Director Michelle Roos released the following statement:

“The resignation offer is a chaotic, costly, and vindictive attempt to scare employees into quitting. This is part of the administration’s plan to traumatize innocent public servants by driving them to leave with threats of unspecified firings or job cuts especially at EPA, where the agency will not be able to function and pollution enforcement will be shut down.”

“This adds a new layer to Trump’s political purge of public servants suspected of not being sufficiently loyal. If successful, the end result will be the end of America’s merit-based civil service and the rise of a political spoilage system that uses taxpayer money to reward loyalists rather than serve the public.”

Michelle Roos is the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Network and is available to speak with the media about the pause on these financial assistance programs and the broader impact this has on communities.
