Highlights

  • EPN submitted comments on EPA’s draft risk evaluation for tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP).

  • EPN also sent a letter to EPA about peer review practices as they relate to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Asbestos Part 2 and the TCEP risk evaluations.

  • EPN submitted comments on EPA’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for Lead and Copper: Improvements (LCRI).

  • EPN presented oral comments at a public hearing for EPA’s proposed Lead and Copper Rule Improvements.

  • EPN submitted comments on EPA’s Draft Scientific Integrity Policy.

  • EPN also submitted comments on EPA’s Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP): Near-term Strategies for Implementation.

Announcements

  • During the first two months of 2024, EPN connected over 40 volunteers to over 140 requests for technical assistance from frontline communities, nonprofit organizations, law clinics, under-resourced government agencies and others.

  • EPN, in partnership with the EPA Alumni Association and EPA Region 6, participated in a virtual roundtable discussion and Q&A session with potential EPA applicants applying through the Pathways Program for recent graduates.

  • EPN members were featured in dozens of media outlets and authored several op-eds. EPN continues to provide in-depth, insightful background information to numerous reporters, congressional staffers, and nonprofits.

  • EPN hired three new team members to support our pro bono technical assistance program. Please welcome, Génesis Sánchez, Katia Pilar Carranza, and Lizbeth García Conde!

EPN Comments on EDSP Near-Term Strategies for Implementation

On February 26, 2024, EPN submitted comments on EPA's white paper "Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP): Near-Term Strategies for Implementation." We suggested modifications that involve the scope of the near-term approach, and prioritization and timelines for—as well as process and methods for EDSP evaluation of—conventional active ingredients.

EPN Comments on EPA’s Draft Risk Evaluation for TCEP

On February 13, 2024, EPN submitted comments on EPA's draft risk evaluation for TCEP. We generally agreed with the findings of the evaluation but suggested developing aggregate exposure assessments for every chemical’s condition of use.

EPN Sends Letter to EPA on Asbestos and TCEP Evaluations

On January 24, 2024, EPN sent a letter to EPA about the agency's peer review practices related to the TSCA Asbestos Part 2 and the TCEP risk evaluations. While we are pleased with the progress, we are also concerned that corners are being cut by the omission of full Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals peer reviews.

On February 5, 2024, we submitted comments on the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for Lead and Copper: Improvements. We commend EPA on many of the improvements, but are concerned with the proposed exemption criteria for large water systems and with the possibility that partial service line replacements will perpetuate the disparity in access to safe drinking water.
