On December 19, 2020, EPN submitted comments on a revised draft risk evaluation of the chemical Pigment Violet 29 (PV29) conducted under the reformed Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The purpose of the risk evaluation is to determine whether a chemical substance such as PV29, which is primarily used as a colorant in inks, paints, coatings, and plastics, presents an unreasonable risk to health or the environment under the conditions of use, including an unreasonable risk to a relevant potentially exposed or susceptible subpopulation. In addition to concerns with inadequate data and deficiencies in determining risks to human health, EPN vigorously objected to the review process, which called for a concurrent peer review rather than providing time to consider public comments, and failed to engage peer reviewers who have critically needed expertise in inhalation toxicology.
