On November 5, 2019, EPN sent a letter to the Chairs and Ranking Members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works expressing strong support for the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2019 (ARBAN). Asbestos is a heat-resistant mineral that can be woven into fabrics and is used in fire-resistant and insulating materials. Asbestos may be found in insulation, drywall, ceiling and floor tiles, cement, paint, and more. Asbestos can cause lung cancer mesothelioma, asbestosis, and a host of other cancerous and noncancerous diseases. It is unsafe even at very low concentrations. Few, if any, pollutants regulated by EPA have been as pervasive in our environment and posed as grave a threat to human health. EPN urged the House and Senate to pass ARBAN as soon as possible.
