On April 14, 2020, EPN members presented testimony on the proposed supplemental provisions to the “censored science” rule at a virtual hearing held by the Union of Concerned Scientists. EPN and other organizations requested a 60-day extension of the comment period and at least three public hearings during that time. However, EPA only granted an additional 30 days to comment and, to date, has not scheduled any virtual public hearings of its own before the May 18 comment deadline. This rule would transform how the agency uses science in policy decisions and scientific assessments, and yet the administration is attempting to push it through when many public health organizations and individuals are focused on battling COVID-19.
