On November 30, 2020, EPN sent a letter to EPA requesting a 40-day extension of the public comment period for the draft supplemental risk evaluation for 1,4-dioxane—a solvent used mainly in the production of other chemicals— under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The 20 days provided for comment, some of which occurs over a holiday, are inadequate to address the significant issues raised by a major expansion in scope in the supplemental analysis. EPN also asked EPA to request the Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals to conduct a peer review of the evaluation to consider whether it underestimates consumer risk, potentially impacting millions of Americans.
