On Wednesday, October 6, EPN member Dr. Betsy Southerland, former EPA Director of Science and Technology, Office of Water, provided testimony in her personal capacity at a hearing on “The Clean Water Act (CWA) and Emerging Contaminants” held by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. Her testimony noted that the CWA gives EPA and states adequate authority to address contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) once they have entered the water cycle, but a systematic process to identify, prioritize, and monitor for CECs is necessary to create the political will to use this authority.
