EPN Comments on NASEM Charge Questions and Ad Hoc Committee for “State-of-the-Science and the Future of Cumulative Impact Assessment”

On Monday, June 10, 2024, EPN submitted comments to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) on the ad hoc committee assembled to explore the state-of-the-science of cumulative impact assessment and the proposed charge questions to be put before the committee. We made suggestions to reduce the number of related charge questions and we were concerned that NASEM did not make a distinction between cumulative risk and cumulative impact. We also urged the committee to focus on minimizing uncertainty as it weighs disparate impacts, despite the absence of a common qualitative index, so that progress can be made.
