EPN submitted comments in response to EPA’s request for information on Climate Pollution Reduction grants. We recommend that planning grants should maximize a cooperative federalism approach to climate change and be made available to all states and Tribes ready and willing to work toward shared climate goals.

EPN submitted comments welcoming the new efforts that EPA proposes to improve compliance of its regulatory decisions for pesticides with the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

EPN delivered oral testimony during a hearing on the proposed National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for Particulate Matter (PM 2.5), supporting an annual level of 8.0 ug/m3 and encouraging EPA to adopt a 24-hour standard from 25 to 30 ug/m3 as recommended by the Chartered Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) majority.

EPN volunteers provided pro bono technical assistance to low-income communities and communities of color 50 times in the last two months, for a total of 280 requests for technical assistance to date.

EPN volunteers recorded helpful videos on Superfund, the Clean Water Act, and EPA Regions to serve as a resource to new staff and communities.

EPN volunteers provided mentoring sessions for over 170 potential EPA job applicants as part of the Office of Air and Radiation’s national recruitment event for students and recent college graduates in the science and engineering fields.

EPN and the EPA Alumni Association conducted virtual EPA recruitment events at Bacone College and Northeastern State University, both Tribal colleges or universities.

EPN’s Work on Air and Climate
Mustafa Santiago Ali, Senior Vice President for Environmental Justice, National Wildlife Federation; former EPA Senior Advisor for Environmental Justice and Community Revitalization; and former EPA Assistant Associate Administrator for Environmental Justice, was quoted in this article regarding the Council on Environmental Quality’s interim guidance that directs federal agencies to consider environmental justice and climate change impacts when making permitting decisions on new energy and infrastructure projects. David Coursen, former Attorney, EPA Office of General Counsel, and Betsy Southerland, former Director, Office of Science and Technology, EPA Office of Water, were quoted in this article about the significant work EPA has planned for 2023 and the challenges the agency may face in the new Congress. John Bachmann, former Associate Director of Science/Policy and New Programs, EPA Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, was quoted in this article discussing the benefits of more stringent air quality standards for particulate matter.

EPN members penned their own op-eds on the Supreme Court, clean transportation, and renewable energy. Judith Enck, former Regional Administrator, EPA Region 2, wrote this op-ed suggesting that the hazardous nature of the East Palestine train derailment was due to our over-reliance on plastics production. Dan Reich, former Assistant Regional Counsel, EPA Region 9, penned this op-ed discussing how the major questions doctrine, recently codified by the US Supreme Court in its West Virginia vs. EPA decision, could limit the roles of administrative agencies. Margo Oge wrote this op-ed discussing how the next phase of greenhouse gas standards for light- and heavy-duty vehicles could secure vehicle electrification goals set out by the Biden administration.
