Letter to Administrator Regan Regarding Best Available Science

On September 21, 2022, EPN sent a letter to EPA Administrator Michael Regan recommending immediate action to increase public confidence in EPA as efforts have been made to compromise the quality of scientific information used in regulatory decision-making. We suggest that EPA enhance its transparency in the use of science to prevent future efforts to interfere with its high-quality scientific work; maintain and promote independent peer review; increase access to the results of EPA-funded scientific research; establish definitions and guidance for promoting consistent use of best available science across the agency; emphasize scientific integrity; and revitalize the role of the EPA Chief Scientist. Preventing any regulatory agency from considering high-quality and relevant research findings in rulemaking threatens public health and the environment.
