On February 24, 2022, Ellen Kurlansky, former Air Policy Analyst and Advisor, EPA Office of Air and Radiation, presented testimony at a public hearing on EPA’s proposal to reaffirm the scientific, economic, and legal underpinnings of the 2012 Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) for power plants. EPN applauded the agency’s restoration of the finding, which deems it appropriate and necessary to regulate hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), including mercury, from power plants after considering cost. EPN also provided recommendations to prevent undercounting quantifiable mercury benefits, which could put the rule in jeopardy.
