On February 25, 2022, John Bachmann, former Associate Director for Science/Policy and New Programs, EPA Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, presented testimony at a public meeting of the Chartered Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) and CASAC Particulate Matter (PM) Panel. Participants discussed the draft CASAC reports on EPA’s Draft Supplement to the 2019 Integrated Science Assessment (ISA) for PM and the Draft PM Policy Assessment (PA). EPN concurred with CASAC’s determination that the current suite of PM2.5 standards is not sufficient to protect public health and that both the annual and daily primary standards need to be strengthened. In addition, EPN agrees on emphasizing evidence-based information over the risk assessment as a basis for recommending stronger daily standards.
